Heat and Hydration
Even though school is out and summer began mentally for so many, summer's official beginning was June 20th, 2012! Summer is a time for pools, relaxation and HEAT and Lancaster is no exception. When it is 80 degrees before 9 a.m., you know that you are living in a desert, and by desert we mean oven.
Many of us may be enjoying the sun as we get our signature Lancaster tans, however with such heat comes responsibility. Every year there are thousands of people who suffer from heat-related illness such as dehydration, heat stroke, heat cramps, and heat exhaustion. With Lancaster creeping up to the high 90s this week, it is vital that everyone take the proper precautions.
- Drink plenty of water throughout the day to avoid dehydration, and if you are very active, be sure to drink things other than water as well to replenish your electrolyte levels.
- If you are on a high protein diet, make sure that you drink at least 8 to 12 glasses of water each day.
- Encourage your children to drink more water as well. They should drink about 6 to 10 glasses of liquid per day.
A good way to replenish everyone's thirst is to get a blended drink, preferably containing fruit or vegetables! Good thing we know just where to get something like this description. If drinking the necessary amounts of water is challenging for you, pick up a smoothie! Hydration is not just about water, but it is about vegetables, fruits, milk and even tea, all of which Juice Box has. So pick up a Daily Five for a hydrating dose of veggies or a Fruit Garden to satisfy your fruit cravings! And always wear sunscreen!
